Agencies studying safety issues of LOX/methane launch vehicles

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is conducting tests to explore the safety implications of using liquid oxygen and methane as rocket propellants. The combination is employed by several of the new generation of launch vehicles, such as the Terran 1, the Terran R and the SpaceX Starship, and is considered efficient and cleaner-burning than the traditional propellant mix of LOX and kerosene. While tests during launches have thus far shown no issues with the combination, the FAA is working to determine its explosive yield to ensure adequate public safety measures, such as hazard assessments and insure against maximum damage. The FAA tests are separate from studies focusing on range issues being conducted by NASA and the US Space Force.
